Ready to Ditch the Cable Company

Why am I paying almost $100 a month for moderate quality programming and a flaky PVR when I really don’t need them? The world has changed. People want to consume media in a variety of ways and yet my cable company’s answer to improve the “quality” of their service is to increase the cost.
Well, I’m out. I’m not sure what I’ll miss anyhow. Lost? 24? Nope, I’m covered between TVShows and Boxee on my Mac, which is hooked up to my TV. Raptors? Twenty-five games have been blacked out for most of Toronto this season because of the TSN2/Rogers debacle – that’s more than a quarter of the schedule I’m missing. (And outside of Bargnani’s emergence, there’s not much to watch these days anyhow.) News? I also get that online, usually on my iPhone.
See what I’m getting at here? The cable company, like the music industry before it, is so slow to adapt to emerging media consumption patterns they’ve cannibalized themselves by not seeing the advantage in integrating web and traditional broadcasting.
So, the countdown is on. I’m pulling the plug on cable real soon. When they’re ready to innovate, I’ll come calling.
