Behind the Scenes: Image Spark

Designed and built by creatives for creatives, Image Spark, launching soon, is a tool to capture, tag, share and converge inspirational images.

Image Spark is the brainchild of Greg Washington, co-worker and skate amigo, who dreamed of a world where he would always have access to the images he saved for creative inspiration. Greg knew that he wasn’t the only one who could use a tool like Image Spark and so T+L, utilizing our Labs initiative, put together a team of of six associates to work on it between client work.

Our first step was a quick and dirty IA process that allowed us to lock down an initial concept and refine points in design while providing enough functional detail to start core development. We then quickly moved into a branding exercise and initial concepts while ramping up back-end and, eventually, interface development. At every step of the process the team, lead by Geoff Teehan, has sought to get every detail right, refining and changing things constantly.

We’ve been careful not to over-design however; no clever interactions where simple ones will do or extraneous features. (e.g. There was a huge back and forth on whether user avatars were even necessary.) The real star are the images that users upload and that’s been our guiding principle through the design and build process.

The good news is we’re almost there. Geoff has posted some previews here, here and here that give more detail about Image Spark. The moodboard tool in particular is something that we hope a lot of creatives find useful.

When it’s all said and done it’ll be one of the most creative, fulfilling and fun projects I’ve ever worked on. I hope that if you’re a creative professional, you’ll love it. And if not, we’d love your feedback!
